Pan Tone

Illustration produced for the CD and EP inlay of Pan Tone, released September 2011.

Pan Tone is a musical collaboration between Haushcka (Volker Bertelmann) an experimental German pianist and Hildur Guđnadóttir an Icelandic cellist, and was originally recorded when the duo performed in 2010 as part of Arctic Circle festival at Kings Place, London.

It is released on Sonic Pieces: a Berlin-based record label which designs and releases limited edition EPs and CDs.

Each composition on the album is named after a different Pantone colour, each a different colour of the sea, and so the design of the EP and illustration follow in this theme.

My illustration is inspired by the Leviathan sea monster myth, specifically a passage from the Hebrew Bible describing the monster: "I will not fail to speak of his limbs, his strength and his graceful form." The final image was produced using three pantone colours featured in the album.

There is a limited number of the EP and CDs, each embossed, numbered and hand bound.
